We met a 10 year-old boy named Omar at a refugee camp in Adana, Turkey. Two years ago, he began to experience perpetual pain in his left temple, and vomited whenever he tilted his head down.
After suffering for more than a year, Omar was finally diagnosed with brain cancer. He barely had the strength to answer our questions, so his mother did most of the talking. She started to sob as she described the state of his physical decay - he rarely spoke and could not do anything by himself. She sobbed harder as she explained that their makeshift tent was full of gaps and holes, and that the air was dusty and haphazard for her ill-stricken son.
With an income of less than USD$70 per month, she has to support Omar and her other two children. After purchasing his medication, there’s not much left to live on.
